Worker Who Fell Through Caravan Roof Compensated

A man who fell through the roof of a caravan on his first day working for his employer has received compensation for the injuries he suffered.

The man had previously worked for another caravan manufacturer and had been used to walking on the roofs of caravans. However, when he did so at his new job, he fell through the roof. He sustained soft tissue injuries to his chest, lower back and hip.

He took some time off work but, after his return, he struggled with physical activity, especially lifting objects above waist height. He felt under pressure to return to work to support his family, which caused him stress and psychological difficulties. He still sometimes experiences pain as a result of his injuries.

He brought a claim against his employer, alleging that it had failed in its obligation to ensure his health and safety by allowing him to climb onto the roof of the caravan without giving him instructions or advice on safety procedures. The employer's insurer admitted liability for his accident and, after an initial offer of compensation was rejected, a five-figure settlement was agreed.
